Starting to read the Bible

Starting to Read the Bible

You can just pick up a Bible and begin to read it.

But it’s quite a big book, well actually it’s 66 books; and it can be hard to know where to start.

TOP TIP Don’t start at the beginning.

A great place to start is with one of what’s called the gospels.

These are the books written about Jesus by his friends. They are eyewitness accounts.

Read a gospel and ask yourself, ‘Who is Jesus?’ Most historians, even those who aren’t Christians, accept that Jesus was a real, historical person; but who he was, well that’s up to you to examine the evidence and decide!

Read the Bible With Others

You can read the Bible on your own, but it helps to read it with others who are looking for something too. A Bible Discovery Community is a small group where people explore and discover the Bible together. The groups are not there to tell people what to think, it’s not a lecture, but a genuine exploration using 4 simple questions:

What stands out to me from what I’ve just read?

What does it tell me about God?

What does it tell me about people?

Could what I’ve read make a difference to my life?

A Bible Discovery Community is free and usually lasts for 90 minutes including refreshments. Bible Discovery Communities do take place in churches, but also in pubs, coffee shops, soft play centres, parks, anywhere people can meet, including online.

If you would like to read more of the Bible, Hope Together and Biblica produce, other eyewitness accounts from Jesus’ friends Mark and Luke.
