How are you doing
It’s important everyone takes the time to work on their wellbeing. Here’s a practical way you can improve yours this year
Take a moment to stop and ask yourself: ‘How am I doing?’ You may be all too aware that the answer to that question is ‘not good’, or you may be so busy running the race of life that you may not have even stopped to considered whether you are running on empty or not.
The word ‘wellbeing’ can get thrown around a lot. But what does it actually mean? The Oxford dictionary defines wellbeing as ‘the state of being comfortable, healthy and happy’. Would you describe yourself in those terms?
In today’s society, many people are feeling overworked, overwhelmed and over-stretched, but they often dismiss this as ‘just life’ and don’t take the time to stop and make some changes. That’s why Hope for All wants to invite you to do The Wellbeing Journey course this year. Presented by TV personalities, Joanna Adeyinka-Burford and Simon Thomas, The Wellbeing Journey aims to help people discover how to run life on a full tank.
Done in groups using engaging videos, the course is based around six key areas of wellbeing – physical, emotional, spiritual, relational, financial and vocational.
The Wellbeing Mindset
As the name of the series implies, The Wellbeing Journey will take you on a journey. Firstly, it explores the wellbeing mindset. The way we think impacts every part out our lives. If we want positive change, we need a healthy mindset. Ask yourself:
Do you really know who you are?
Do you know where you’re really at?
Do you know you can really change?
Simon shares: ‘We as human beings often want to feel safe, we want to feel secure, and often we find our safety and security in perhaps our jobs, our finances, our relationships, or even just in keeping a roof over our heads. But we also know sometimes in life things don’t feel particularly safe or secure, and when that happens it can have a really negative impact on our wellbeing and particularly the way in which we think.
‘That was definitely the case for me when I cast my mind back to 2017. The first half of the year everything is good, family life is good. It is myself, my wife Gemma and my boy Ethan, I’ve even got a great job at Sky but then in the November of that year, everything changes. My wife gets diagnosed with blood cancer and just three days later, she’s gone. My world, its safety and security, has gone in the space of three days. And I am worrying about my finances, I am worrying about how I bring up an eight-year-old boy who now has to do life without his mum. Everything that felt certain, now feels horribly uncertain. And I will be honest, the only way I got through that was changing my mindset. Yes, it took a while to get there, but it was the realisation that life was still there to be embraced. And it was a change in my mindset that changed everything.’
Developing a wellbeing mindset is crucial to experiencing an increase in overall wellbeing.
