We have helped the schools out with various projects – so far mostly in Sabi, but we are looking to have a wider area in which we supply help. We provided both of the schools in Sabi with libraries – this involved having bookshelves, tables, benches, flooring and curtains made, supplying them with over 1500 books and setting up a library system with files, cards, tickets and a system for borrowing the books.

We were asked if we could help with building a wall around the Lower Basic School teachers' accommodation, as it was open to the elements and to thieves, and we were able to do this. We were also able to give some one-off gifts to the teachers to help them with transport back to their home villages. One of the problems schools up-country face is that teachers do not like to be so far away from the capital, living with people who are not of their own people group, so we are always looking for ways in which we can help give incentives to teachers who are willing to work in Sabi.

Another small thing we have been able to do for the Lower Basic School in Sabi is repair the well which had been out of use for a very long time. This means that they are now able to resume growing vegetables and trees, and through this can make some money for the school, as well as helping the students to see the value of good nutrition etc. We have also been able to provide stationery, sports equipment and food.

At present the teachers of the Upper Basic School are asking for help with a building in which they can be accommodated, as at the moment they are scattered throughout the village, and are mostly unhappy in their lodgings. The project calls for about £5000.

Another big need is for a roof on one of the buildings of the Lower Basic School. Last rainy season the whole roof blew off, and there is not the money to have it replaced, so the children are having to go to school in shifts and are all squashed into half of the space which is normally available.

We are constantly being made aware of needs at the schools in which we are involved. If you would like to help in any way then please let us know. Click here to fill out a contact form  »
