We have held adult literacy classes in Sabi in the past, and aim to make them available again in the future, particularly among Serahule people at the coast. There is a great demand for this, especially from young men who have not gone to school and want to learn English so that they can get jobs in the capital and further afield.
One thing that we feel passionately about is getting literature to people in their own heart languages. We would love to see the schools here beginning to teach children in their own languages, as is now happening in many African countries.
Our contribution at the moment is in translating Bible stories into Serahule. We have been working on this for a few years now and at present have tapes available with the stories on, which we have distributed in many villages, and made available to anyone who is interested. There has been a very positive response to these tapes and we are now working on updating them with the help of literate Serahule students. We hope that the latest versions will be available by the summer.If you would like to be involved in making more of these tapes available, please let us know. We need to pay the students for their help and we will need financial help to hire a recording studio when we get to the stage of being able to put the updated stories onto tape. We want to make sure that they are of a high quality so that people will want to listen to them. We also have a dream to put the stories onto the radio, as nearly everyone here listens to it regularly.
