The Joshua Project is made up of a small group of people in a church in Yapton, West Sussex, who have a vision for community development projects in the third world. They have been an invaluable help to HopeForAll, raising money for two wells (Philip's well and Hannah's well) and for the building of the community health nurse clinic/living quarters in Sabi. This is their story:
The 'well project' came about initially when a member of the Joshua Group had a serious illness and surgery followed by a 'near-death experience'. He was in a cold, evil and fearful blackness and was then drawn towards an open door which revealed an amazing flood of light and the sounds of children's voices, laughing, giggling and playing. He was then shown a glass of dirty, contaminated water and was told "they need clean water, so build them a well". This vision was shared with the Joshua Group and others who visited the patient who said that he knew God was asking him to raise the money for a well.
The church was in contact with a family working in The Gambia and e-mails were sent back and forth to verify the feasibility and costs of such a project. The proposal was shared with the group and church members who had a bring-&-buy sale to start the ball rolling. A model well was made in wood with an invitation to fill it with coins & loose change. This is on display every Sunday morning and some folk have given very generous gifts over a three-year period. There has also been a concert evening by Charles Timberlake, a wonderful pianist/composer who will be giving another concert this spring to raise further funds.
On completion of Hannah's well, photos sent from The Gambia were shown to the church giving encouragement to continue raising funds for a second well. Philip's well is now near completion.
It was then made known to us that the village nurse, Fatu Sowe, had nowhere to treat her patients and that the whole village would benefit from having a small building (block-built) in which she could hold clinics and also to provide sleeping accommodation for her. This has also been achieved and a further gift from the church has enabled the nurse to start a training course to enhance her knowledge and improve healthcare in the village.*
The Joshua Group and others who have supported this project are privileged to have been able to make a difference to the people of Sabi.
* The course will last 18 months, and costs around £600. So far, Fatu has one-third of this money, so any gifts toward this would be gratefully received. If you would like to help, please contact us
