Until recently, Fatu Sowe worked as the community health nurse in the village of Sabi, offering advice, treatment and medicine to the people in the community. She is currently undertaking a university course in order to further her training. This is her story:

Hello! My name is Fatou Sowe. I am 27 years old and I was born in Sibanor village in the western region of The Gambia. I  completed my secondary education in 1998 and in 1999 I gained admission at the School for Enrolled Community Health Nurse. I graduated in 2001 and since then have been working with the government under the Department of the State for Health posted to Sabi village in the Upper River Division of The Gambia.

Sabi health post is one of the series of posts aimed to enhance the health delivery system of the nation by providing the services to the doorsteps of the people. Due to inadequate resources the community health nurses maintaining the post have to live within the homes of the chief or prominent persons, and this does not provide the needed security and confidentiality to the service that is to be provided for the entire community at large.

However, this problem became a thing of the past when I met the HopeForAll people. Their organisation's humanitarian gesture towards the construction of a staff quarters for the health post has gone a long way in promoting quality health service delivery. This positive contribution has also greatly improved the quality of service being offered by the health worker on the ground.

The organisation has also gone further to give me sponsorship toward my Advanced Diploma in Community Health Nursing which I am presently undertaking at the university. I am still in need of funds for the remainder of my course so would appreciate any philanthropists who would like to help me.
